Skin Boosters: What are they, the benefits, when to have them & more.

Skin boosters the latest craze in the aesthetics world, but are they really worth the hype? We’ve laid out all the info here in this blog, from what skin boosters actually are, the benefits and much more. So if you’re considering skin boosters and want to know more, make sure to keep reading so you can see what everyone is obsessed with!

Skin boosters are taking the aesthetics world by storm, and with good reason. They offer an easy way to get a glowing complexion and improve the overall quality of your skin. There are a range of different brands to choose from, but the underlying concept is the same. They are made up of a high percentage of hyaluronic acid (HA) which is a substance that our bodies naturally produce that helps to maintain moisture levels within our skin. As we age we lose roughly 1% of our HA stores each year after the age of 30, this can result in the formation of fine lines and volume loss. By injecting HA into the skin, in the form of skin boosters, we deliver high levels of hydration which can help improve skin tone, texture, firmness and even reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Here at Skn Plus, we work mainly with 3 brands:

Profhilo

Profhilo is actually classed as a bioremodeling product, not a skin booster, due to the significant tightening/lifting effect that it can deliver. Profhilo is our preferred product to use for clients who are experiencing skin laxity and wish to restore the firmness of their skin. It contains 64g of hyaluronic acid which is one of the highest available on the market, and this helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in the skin to improve tissue quality and fight signs of ageing.

Seventy Hyal 2000

Seventy Hyal is a relatively new product to the market but has been described as ‘The Next Generation Skin Booster’. It has high molecular weight HA which achieves a radiant glow for that ‘glass-skin’ effect, whilst helping to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Seventy can be used on clients of all ages (above 18) and it is our preferred product for those who are experiencing tired, dull, lacklustre skin that needs a boost of radiance.

Lumi Eyes

Lumi Eyes is formulated for use specifically around the eye area to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. The product is packed with polynucleotides which help repair damaged tissue, replenish moisture, restore volume, smooth fine lines and can reduce dark circles for a brighter under eye area. Lumi Eyes will also stimulate the production of collagen and elastic to slow the ageing process and support the skin.

Skin boosters or microneedling - which is better?

Skin boosters work from the inside to hydrate and rejuvenate, whilst microneedling works on the surface to stimulate collagen and elastin. Both treatments deliver great results so neither one is better than the other, they actually work great when combined as part of a holistic skin routine to enhance your results.

2. What are the benefits of skin boosters?

Skin boosters are a fantastic way to improve the overall appearance and quality of your skin. We’ve already mentioned a few benefits, but here’s a full breakdown of what you could experience:

  • Radiant, glowing complexion

  • Improved skin tone & texture

  • Improve skin firmness

  • Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Reduce dry, crepey skin

  • Tighter/lifted skin

  • Fight signs of ageing

  • Better hydration

  • Improved the appearance of dark circles

  • Stimulate collagen & elastin production for healthier skin overall

  • Can be used to treat face, hands, neck & chest/decolletage

Not only that but skin boosters are a quick treatment with little to no downtime, anyone can benefit from them and unlike topical skin care products that only work on the surface, skin boosters can treat the skin at its core and deliver the entirety of its powerful ingredients where they are needed the most.

Quick Fact: Some skin boosters can be injected into the lips to deliver intense hydrate for a plumping effect without changing the shape

3. How long do the results from skin boosters last?

If it’s your first time having skin boosters we recommend 2-3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart. After that you can expect your results to last 6-9 months. At that point you can have a single treatment to maintain your results and ensure your skin is glowing and hydrated all year round.

4. Are the results from skin boosters immediate?

No, the results from skin boosters can take a few days, up to a few weeks to show. Immediately after your treatment your skin may look a little red at the injection sites and you may have some small bumps where the hyaluronic acid has been injected, it looks similar to an insect bite. This usually subsides within a few hours as the product will disperse under your skin.

5. Are skin boosters better the same as dermal filler?

Whilst both skin boosters and dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, they are formulated differently and as such serve a different purpose. Dermal filler is cross linked which makes it a thicker product that’s more stable and allows us to add volume to fill lines and wrinkles, and contour the face to lift and define facial features. Skin Boosters are not cross linked which means they can spread more easily within the skin, delivering hydration plumping the skin from within.

Skin boosters can be a fantastic alternative to dermal filler for someone who simply wants to achieve a more youthful look without altering their facial features, however when the treatments are combined you can achieve even better results! There is also the added benefit of being able to treat the neck, chest and hands with skin boosters for a total anti-ageing effect.

6. Are there any side effects?

Skin boosters are a safe treatment with little to no downtime. As with any injectable treatment you may experience swelling, bruising and redness to the injection site - you can use arnica gel on the area to help this if you wish. It's common to have small bumps where the product was injected but these typically disappear within a few hours as the products disperses in the skin.

  • Here are a few things to avoid after your skin booster treatment:

  • Do not touch the area for 6 hours after your treatment

  • No makeup on the area for 24 hours

  • Avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours

  • Avoid facials/sunbeds/chemical peels/sauna/swimming etc for 2 weeks

Who isn’t suitable for skin boosters?

If you are pregnant or breastfeed, under 18yrs old, undergoing chemo or dealing with certain other medical conditions you may not be suitable for skin boosters.

7. How much do skin boosters cost?

The price for skin boosters will vary depending on what brand of skin booster the practitioner uses, how many sessions are required and location of the clinic. Profhilo for example tends to be a more expensive skin booster than Jalupro or Seventy Hyall. Generally speaking you could expect to pay between £100-£300 for a skin booster treatment.

8. Are skin boosters painful?

As with any injectable treatment you may experience minor discomfort but the treatment is very quick and numbing cream is available should you wish to use it at your appointment.

9. The takeaways

Skin boosters are a fantastic option for anyone looking to improve the quality and appearance of their skin. They are beneficial to people of all ages, and can even be used on different areas of the body to revitalise the skin. For those who want to achieve an anti-ageing effect without altering their appearance, skin boosters are a great option. However they can also be used in conjunction with other injectable treatments such as dermal filler and anti-wrinkle for even better results. The treatment is safe, relatively pain free with minimal downtime, and maintenance is only required every 6-9 months!
